Mona's Personal Application
Throughout my journey studying abroad in the United States, I have met students from all around the word where they came from different backgrounds. As a health administration student, I was required to work with other student in-group projects and research papers. Based on my experience in school working with others, I realized that not all students have the skills that qualify them to be a team player. Some students prefer to work individually instead of being part of a team. According to Dubin in his article “Building High-Performance Teams” that discusses the factors and characteristics of the effective teams, “High performance is risky business. It’s not about just working harder or setting the bar higher. It’s about establishing new ways to work and deliver results”(2005), I totally agree with him, teams need to work smart not hard and they need to be creative in order for them to out-stand.
The term “Team” in the OB book is defined as “Two or more people who work interdependently over some time period to accomplish common goals related to some task-oriented purpose.” (Colquitt, 2010). In my opinion, building an effective team requires a lot of effort and skills more than what people presume, as it is not an easy task to accomplish. There are many factors that classify the success or the failure of a team. According to our model, “Effective Team” on the second page, in order to build a well-designed and effective team, all the members should have valuable qualities such as goal oriented, reliability, respect, listening skills, balanced role, support and good communication skills that leads the team to reach their goals and objectives.
The “Effective Team” model that Adam and I created lists the most important characteristics that we think it helps in building an ideal effective team. Each team must have similar goals and objectives so they are heading in the same direction. Good communication is one of the key elements that should be established working in a team. I have experienced a grope where the communication level was high where we all were effective and that had a positive reflective of the final product where the flow of the project was smooth and connected. On the other had, I had worked with students that lack in communication where it had a negative of effect on our final product, and it was clear that the final project was done in pieces. Without good communication between team members, there would be a lack of effectiveness. Communication does not necessary mean face-to-face meetings. Team members should figure out the most convenient way to communicate with everyone. According to Pentland in the article "The New Science of Building Great Teams" it discussed the key element of communication, "the most valuable form of communication is face-to-face. E-mail and texting are the least valuable"(2010). From my experience as a student, I found that the best way to communicate with other group members is online meetings, it is hard to find the same time that fits everyone's schedule. This way of communication will help all members to attend meetings anywhere they are. i do agree with the author that face to face communication in more valuable and effective because it allow the team to effectively discusses the project by sharing and expanding their ideas.
To support all the team members, members should be supportive of each other’s ideas and keep an open mind to and consider all ideas. A balanced role is important to clearly know the strength and weaknesses of all members and for distributing and balancing the roles accordingly. I usually prefer to be assigned for some specific roles more than others, such as gathering information, take pictures, create transitions and taking care of the technical parts of the project.
Another important skill that I think each member in the team should consider is listening. All team members must listen clearly and closely to each other thoughts. They need to discuses all the ideas and suggestions provided by team members. Good listening skills will help in minimizing conflicts and creating effective communication. Good listener will absorb and understand other members’ point of view with out arguing each point.
Last but not the least, all members should respect and value everyone’s ideas and take them into consideration. In my opinion, if all these characteristics were applied to the team, it would indubitably succeed.
I had experienced working side by side with good effective group members where all team members were team players and also in ineffective groups, where the lack of interest and communication resulted with poor outcomes. I have learned a lot form all these experiences. Friends and family describe me as a flexible and easygoing, yet observant. Thus, I was able to develop healthy relationships with other group members by understanding their strength and weaknesses; focusing on what each person can do the best in. I always try to be a team player by coming prepared and share and discuses information with my team. I try to fully engage in the work and act with other members to accomplish our goals.
I enjoy participating in volunteering events, where we need to work side by side with others to have a successful event. All the members showed a commitment to each other by dividing the work with each member responsible for delivering the best possible end product on. This course has provided me with a lot of valuable information. I had the chance to advance my skills in my personal, professional and educational journey. Throughout my experience I realized that it is really helpful to have a meaningful relationship with your team, because in the end it can be very beneficial for the success of the group.
