Our Personal Application
We can apply the model that we created to the high school soccer team that we were aport of. Our old coach left to go coach somewhere else, so it was the first season with a new coach that none of us had meet before. We did not meet him until a handful of weeks before the first week of practice. Our new coach made us work much harder than our previous coach, especially when it came to running. We were doing sprints, ladders, and two miles more than we had ever done before. This was very new to us because our previous coach only made us run on occasion. Another big difference was that he was much more stern and not afraid to yell at us from across the field. Whereas our old coach was more supportive and spoke in a conversation type tone most of the time. This new coach was able to pull us together as a team very well. We started to play together as a team and started to win a lot of games. In fact, it was the best season our high school soccer team had ever had. We won our conference for the first time ever and got the highest seeding in the state tournament ever. We made a good run before we lost to a team that was ranked top five in the state; we were also ranked top five at one time also.
In order for our soccer team to be effective we needed to use everything that is outlined in the model that we created. Good communication was one of the most essential parts to our successful team. We needed to be able to communicate well on the field in order to put the ball in the net. Many people may not be able to hear it but often times we are yelling to tell each other what to do with the ball if our back was turned to the opponents around us. We also needed to communicate through body language because we would not yell to each other what we were about to do because then the opponents would know. We would run in certain directions or put a hand up in order to get the attention of the team member with the ball. Along with communication on the field we needed to communicate well off the field. If we did not get along well off the field we would not have gotten together and played well on the field.
Support was another important aspect of our team. Sometimes the coach would yell at you and you needed a little pick me up. There was always a team member there to make it easier to get through it. Also, if someone messed up in a game we would help by being there to fix each other’s mistakes.
In soccer balanced roles might have been what made us an effective team. Everyone had their positions: goal keeper, defender, midfielder, and striker. In those positions there might have been smaller roles that someone had to do but everyone knew their job and how to get it done. Each person’s specific role was understood and collaborated with the other roles in order to create our winning team. Also, the people who were bench players knew that if their number was called they would need to fill in and play as well or better.
Listening skills was also important with our team. With a new coach we had to learn how to play a style of soccer that was new to us. Also, our coach would critique our skills and play so we had to adjust to what he said which in turn made us better players and a better soccer team.
Respect and reliability go hand and hand with each other. We had to rely on each other to win games because we knew we could not do it on our own. We had to respect how each one of us played compared to ourselves.
Goal orientation propelled us through the season. As we continued to win games we became more and more confident and our goals became greater than they were at the beginning of the season. This is what kept us motivated through the tough losses that we had.
